Victory Firelight was born just before the start of the 2010-11 college basketball season. Instead of asking the question “Why?” it was more of a “Why not?” proposition.
Butler was coming off the first of its two straight appearances in the national title games (seems too long ago?) and two Butler grads were in the midst of unexpected transitions within the media industry. Those two guys – Damon Lewis and Dave McConnell – decided they had enough free time on their hands to take a chance at starting the first legitimate, independent blog covering the Butler Men’s Basketball program. There was basically only one source to find any kind of consistent coverage of the team… so there had to be an opportunity, right?
A short six months later, we concluded the season sitting courtside on media row at Houston’s Reliant Stadium. The Bulldogs had done the unthinkable – again, in a very different way – and Victory Firelight had found a nice little niche among the Butler faithful. Damon soon moved on – heading to the East Coast to continue his career in the business – while Dave decided to take a chance and go solo with the site for the 2011-12 season, which didn’t work out for the best.
Season 3 brought a renewed spirit to the site, with a redesign and new features to help Butler fans find both our original content and automated links to other local/national voices. Now in Season 4, and Butler’s move to the Big East, Dave is keeping the heartbeat alive (with help from a few contributing writers) while his day job doesn’t allow for constant game coverage and (necessary) commitment. Please bear with us, we hope it’s still worth it!
